The Doumbek drum (also Goblet drum, Chalice drum, or Darbuka) is a goblet shaped hand drum used mostly in music originating in countries near the Middle East. Its thin, responsive drumhead and resonance help it produce a distinctively crisp sound. These drums are known to be of ancient origin and are played with a much lighter touch and quite different strokes (sometimes including rolls or quick rhythms articulated with the fingertips) than most other hand drums.
